AJH Cables were recently contacted by an existing customer located in Ethiopia who had a requirement for an ATEX approved telephone system suitable for use in an underground mine. The main restrictions we had to overcome was the lack of external power supply as well as the harsh conditions the system was going to be used in. After a few hours of searching the internet for ATEX approved telephone systems and speaking to several companies we discovered Ex Howl-Call Telephones by EATON.
The Howl-Call telephone is a battery-free and network-independent telephone with highly efficient dynamic transmitter and receiver capsules offering remote communication without power supply. The call signal is generated by turning a rotary knob containing an audio frequency dynamo. The telephones have a sturdy, impact-resistant and weather-proof housing making them suitable for applications under rough conditions. Designed for use in potentially explosive or firedamp-endangered areas such as blast furnace areas, in tunnel building or mining areas, offshore, on oil rigs or deep-sea vessels – in any place that’s not (yet) connected to any energy source, the dynamic telephone system presents an ideal opportunity for connection. To the switchboard, to the base station or to colleagues above ground the surprisingly easy but efficient system allows for reporting of malfunctions and is an effective way to call for help in the event of an accidents.
After presenting our findings to the customer and getting approval from the head technical engineer overseeing the installation, we received the official purchase order. The order was for 2 intrinsically safe wall mounted telephones with howl call generator and 26 hand telephones with howl call generator along with over 8km of 2×2.14mm² flat band cable. The cable was supplied on 8 drums to the customers required lengths ranging from 190mtrs up to 1,960mtrs. All drums were heat treated and suitably prepared for long distance travel. Pictured below is the cable before it was prepared for export by sea freight to the local port. To ensure the goods cleared customs as fast as possible we supported the customer with consular documentation certified by our local Chamber of Commerce.
Peter Lawrence who worked on the enquiry from the beginning said “it was an interesting project to be involved with, a bit of a mind field to start with but the more I looked on the web and spoke to different potential suppliers the more I started to understand the customers requirements. There are many different types of ATEX approved systems available but once I come across the Howl-Call telephone system I knew we was on to a winner. We presented our findings to the customer who immediately confirmed their interest and with 3 weeks of the initial quote we received the order”.
